My creative cycle is theme-based.
An idea comes to me, sparking a small series of portraits.
Sometimes I draw in graphite, black & white
to capture pensive or intense moods.
Sometimes I draw in pastel, bright colors to convey
the person’s spirit & aspirations.
I find that if I know the person in my portrait,
I strive to bring out as many details as possible.
It’s as if I can tell you about their personal experience
from this freckle or that wrinkle.
If I do not know the person, I am either
caught up by my own mood or by
how I imagine their story to play out.
The result seems to be softer cheeks & glossier stares.
I find achieving real likeness a challenge &
enjoy the a-ha moments
when a nose becomes a nose and
an eye becomes an eye.
